7/29/04

GTSAV1 (TAS01160) Buoy deployed from R/V Savannah offshore of Savannah R. Entrance channel

Crew: P.Work, C.Johnson, R/V Savannah crew.
31.9917N 80.7350W (31 deg 59.5 min N, 80 deg 44.1 min W)
Water depth: 38 ft MLLW

9/10/04

Checked mooring, cleaned mooring, cleaned buoy hull. Work done from R/V Gannet

Crew: P. Work, C. Johnson, T. Moore, H. Carter.

Arrived at buoy ~Noon EDT. Max observed water depth = 41 ft. 3-5 ft visibility in upper part of water column; zero for last 5-10 ft. Inline float in mooring at 15 ft depth. Fouling moderate; scraped off buoy. First dive with full face mask and communications gear.

11/5/04

Deployed 1200kHz RDI ADCP near buoy from R/V Savannah, 12:37PM local time. Ground line and Sonotronics pinger, 76 kHz, 4-4-4. Ground line runs roughly north-south, with instrument at north end. Both are west of buoy.

Crew: P.Work, R/V Savannah crew, and Coastal Engineering and Measurements classes

ADCP coordinates:

N 31 59.551, W 80 44.200

Anchor coordinates:

N 31 59.545, W 80 44.238

11/22/04

Checked buoy mooring, cleaned. R/V Gannet

Crew: PW, Trent, Jay, two students from Statesboro (Matthew Barrow and Daniel Chicola)

Buoy had been hit, but still functional and no apparent damage. Swivel in mooring was stuck and mooring line had started to wrap around it. Loosened by hand.

Flat calm and visibility better than expected: 5-10 ft at bottom. Sonotronics pinger on RR wheel not visible.

Also dove on ADCP: found it easily, but it was upside down. Flipped over manually. Could not hear pinger. Later discovered pinger receiver not working.

2/25/05

Retrieved buoy and ADCP w/R/V Savannah

Crew: PW, Trent, R/V Savannah crew, Navid, Jeseon, Bob S. RR wheel buried in sand; cut rubber cable to free buoy. Recovered ADCP by grappling for ground line.

Buoy has scuff mark first noticed on 11/22, and one solar panel is now shattered. But still functioning properly. NOTE: for 7/04-2/05 period, buoy was deployed w/”upside down” mooring, i.e. rubber cable at bottom of mooring.

End of Feb ‘05

Shipped buoy sensor box to Canada for testing

Checkout was warranted since impact had been hard enough to crack dome near bolt holes and shatter a solar panel.

4/22/05

Received sensor box back from Canada, along with new dome, solar panel, and gaskets

Sensor box checked out ok, nothing out of calibration.

4/22/05

Reinstalled sensor box in GTSAV1 buoy, installed new solar panel

4/26/05

Installed new dome on GTSAV1 buoy, programmed buoy, dragged outside for testing

Changed phone number to phone into PAW’s lab instead of Abler’s lab.

4/28/05

Successfully tested telemetry

All systems go with buoy in parking lot, phoning into PAW’s lab

5/7/05

Delivered GTSAV1 buoy to Skidaway

5/12/05

Deployed GTSAV1 buoy from R/V Savannah

Crew: PAW, JN, R/V Savannah, etc. Buoy in water in flat calm seas by ~12noon EDT. Single RR wheel for anchor.

5/13/05

Modem/phone testing

No data yet from GTSAV1 buoy, appears not to be calling in. Notified Coast Guard and Sea Tow and asked them to keep an eye out for buoy.

6/6/05

Attempted to talk to GTSAV1 buoy on site; rebooted

Crew: PAW and Charlie Williams. Rode out in gray McKee in 1-2 ft seas to check on buoy. Attempted to talk via infrared, but a bit too much motion. Reset three times, last at 11:00 EDT. One hour ride from buoy back to Lazaretto Creek landing. Returned to office to find several valid wave records.

6/14/05

Disassembled "Miami buoy"

Miami buoy (GTSAV2) was retrieved 6/4/05 and found to have a cracked dome and inoperable TAS box. Removed TAS box and shipped to Axys for inspection/repair.

9/15/05

Inspected mooring, GTSAV1 buoy in water

Crew: PAW, C. Williams, T. Moore, S. Karasu. Dove on mooring in nearly flat calm conditions as tide fell. Mooring and buoy looked fine, fouling not severe. Visibility 10 ft even at bottom. Cleaned buoy and mooring and headed in.

11/2/05

Installed GTSAV2, recovered GTSAV1

Crew: PAW, Bob S., Servet K., R/V Savannah Crew. Installed GTSAV2 buoy next to GTSAV1, dove on GTSAV1, released, and recovered. Dome found to be cracked again.

11/4/05

Installed Inmarsat-D+ in GTSAV1 buoy, cleaned buoy.

Still need firmware upgrade to use Inmarsat.

12/20/05

Attempted to get to buoy for reboot, but a bit rough in a 15' Zodiac. Aborted.

Crew: PAW, Charlie Williams

1/3/06

Installed eeprom upgrade in GTSAV1 buoy to enable Inmarsat-D+, reassembled, and painted with anti-fouling paint.

1/5/06

Motored out to buoy in SeaCat, rebooted GTSAV2 buoy. No response.

Crew: PAW, Charlie Williams. Notified SkIO that an R/V Savannah trip for buoy swap is necessary.

3/22/06

Motored out to buoy location in SeaCat, could not find it. Notified SkIO, Coast Guard, GT Risk Management.

Crew: PAW, Charlie Williams, Servet Karasu.

3/30/06

Motored out to buoy location in SeaCat, performed u/w search at mean of reported positions for 11/05-12/05. No sign of buoy, mooring, or RR wheel. Moore and Richter performed circle search out to 125' radius.

Crew: PAW, Charlie Williams, Trent Moore, Michael Richter.

4/3/06-4/11/06

Inspected mooring, moused shackles, tested buoy. Not always calling in after reboot; hard-coded watch circle so that operation can be verified prior to leaving dock. Got web pages working with new network. Made arrangements for redeployment of GTSAV1 buoy.

4/20/06

Deployed GTSAV1 buoy from R/V Savannah. In water by 10:30AM EDT.

Crew: R/V Savannah + P. Work, S. Karasu, H. Demir, T. Moore, Corey from SCAD.

5/9/06

R/V Bold (EPA vessel) performed sidescan survey of buoy location and identified several potential targets.

5/10/06

Updated web pages, processing and plotting routines.

5/19/06

Dove from SeaCat near sonar target nearest to position of lost buoy (GTSAV2). Used Humminbird side-imaging to identify targets. Found old mooring from previous deployment but no evidence of missing buoy. Coords of RR wheel that was found: 31 59.495 N, 80 44.106 W. Also inspected mooring on presently deployed buoy.

Crew: P. Work, T. Moore, C. Williams, S. Karasu.

5/24/06

Discovered new position fixes from GTSAV2 buoy (TAS1290), placing it hundreds of miles east of Norfolk, VA! Apparently longer daylight hours have resulted in sufficient power, at least sporadically, for telemetry to work. Attempted to change sampling to 1 min/hr to conserve power for higher priority telemetry. Asked Axys to forward any new messages via email.

6/27/06

Went out on R/V Gannet to rescue GTSAV1 buoy (TAS1160) after it started sending "out of watch circle" messages at 9:30PM EDT the previous evening. Found buoy to the northeast of deployment site, towed south for four hours at 3-4 kt, and anchored it for the night near the Wassaw Sound sea buoy.

GTSAV2 buoy (TAS1290) still reporting in sporadically (every 4-5 days); now about halfway across Atlantic.

Crew: P. Work, T. Moore, H. Demir.

6/28/06

Retrieved buoy using crane on R/V Savannah. Powered off.

Crew: T. Moore, M. Richter, R/V Savannah.

7/5/06

Picked up buoy from Skidaway. This particular mooring included a wire rope section, and it looks like someone cut it with bolt cutters.

Crew: P. Work.

9/26/06

Deployed GTSAV1 buoy (TAS1160) from R/V Savannah at new site south of Savannah River Entrance channel (31 55.211N, 80 44.281W

Crew: P. Work, R/V Savannah crew.

9/27/06

Deleted extraneous records, corrected while buoy was running in parking lot or on deck of ship.

Crew: P. Work.

11/14/06

Dove on buoy, inspected mooring. Looks fine, little growth. Chain pinched under RR wheel and mooring wrapped around wheel but not causing any significant problems, it appears.

No report from GTSAV2 buoy since 9/24/06, somewhere NW of Azores.

Crew: P. Work, T. Moore, K. Haas, H. Demir on GT SeaCat.

2/07

Ordered new mooring and replacement batteries.

P. Work.

2/23/07

Installed charging system in utility trailer; installed new batteries to keep them charged while awaiting deployment in GTSAV1 buoy.

P. Work, with some help from Justin, Jimmy, and Erick.

2/28/07

Dove on buoy to inspect mooring; no problems found.

P. Work, K. Golden from NOAA, Jimmy, Kevin Haas.

4/6/07

Fixed network problem that was preventing real-time updates from getting posted on internet.

P. Work, L. Thames.

4/20/07

Started receiving watch circle alarms. Buoy headed south at 1 km/hr. Rough seas (4 ft at buoy, 6 ft at Grays Reef), wind from NE. (Received an alarm on Mon 4/16/07 also, but apparently only one bad fix).

4/22/07

Still getting warnings via Iridium and Inmarsat. Motored in SeaCat from Turner's Creek to site 8 miles offshore of entrance to Wassaw Sound. Found buoy easily; tied 200 ft of anchor line and Danforth to bridle.

Crew: P. Work, C. Williams, J. Smith, M. Worthy.

4/24/07

R/V Savannah recovered buoy in the evening.

Crew: T. Moore, R/V Savannah.

6/4-5/07

Removed 3-year-old batteries from Buoy TAS01160, installed new batteries. Downloaded raw data, painted hull. Dome has multiple hairline cracks where radius is smallest.

Crew: P. Work.
